Welcome to my room.

My name is Madeleine! I am a multi-disciplinary artist hailing from Treaty 1 territory (Winnipeg, MB), and I now live in Otepoti, Aotearoa (Dunedin, New Zealand). My pronouns are she/her and my favourite colour is brown. I do not have a website yet but my instagram is @madeleine_dove and I occasionally share my art there! [ Go Home ]

De Stevens - Big Small Town

A photo that my dear flatmate took of me a few days after I moved in.

This is potentially my favourite corner of the room as it is minimal and remains tidy. It is a joy to wake up each morning and look at some of my most-loved books, my own artwork on the wall, and a desk covered in art supplies. This is a corner built on possibility.

1, a watercolour of mine, heavily inspired by Sara St. Cyr. 2nd, a square painting depicting my feelings for a friend over summer. 3rd, a cut out of Ralph Hotere, an admired Aotearoa artist who I look up to greatly. All held up with beige medical tape. Also, my cowboy / sun hat typically lives on a hook here.

The first piece is a wood carving print, made lovingly and gifted to me by the first friend I made in NZ! Next is a short poem of mine written in brown marker on a scrap of wool. Next, a tiny card painting I made in my first week in this city, a short but liberating phase in my painting “career”. Finally, a card made by Dominique Carriere, included when I purchased her wonderful handmade zine, “INDIGENIZE”.

This mirror is placed expertly, making for lucrative mirror selfy opportunities.

Where my shoes live, and usually my black woolen beret, but I think I was wearing it at the time of taking this video.

This bed base is the stuff of dreams (aesthetically speaking). It didn’t fit down the staircase so the previous flatmate gave it to me. My mattress is very old and was also free, and I love it. I refuse to buy into duvets (idk) and instead prefer to layer 2-3 wool blankets, which are an easy and inexpensive thrift store find here, and maybe 2 non-wool blankets for maximum cozy cuddles. Look closely to see Gigi (white bear) and Benji (brown bear), companions from when I lived in my van last year.

My whole room in one minute, with a cameo from a flatmate.
